HEAVY rain and a blocked drain left a cul-de-sac under almost three feet of water as downpours battered the area.
Firefighters spent an-hour-and-a-half pumping water from Woodland View, in Wingate, following Saturday’s heavy rain.
The incident came as Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and Durham Police set up incident rooms to deal with a large number of weather-related calls.
The fire service received 70 calls within three hours and police urged people not to travel in the rain-lashed conditions unless absolutely necessary.
A crew from Peterlee Fire Station was called to Woodland View around 4pm on Saturday and used a portable pump to get rid of the water, which was in danger of reaching a number of homes.
Firefighters from the station were also called to the Dewhirst Clothing factory and the Conder Products factory, in Peterlee, to reports of leaking roofs overnight on Saturday.
They spent around 20 minutes at each incident and waited for engineers to repair water damage.
