RECORD numbers of students at a college will go on to study at university next year.
East Durham College, in Peterlee, has reported its highest number of students going to university in the last 15 years.
More than 200 students at the college applied for places at universities throughout the country.
Despite increased pressure due to cuts in the higher education sector, 141 students have guaranteed themselves a university spot providing they achieve the required results.
Sally Hudson, vice principal at the college, said: “Each of these places filled by a student from East Durham College represents a potentially life changing opportunity.
“We are very focused on trying to encourage our students to aim higher and apply for places at university and we are therefore thrilled that so many managed to get a place despite the cap on the number of places available.
“We wish every student the best on their degree course and hope this will lead to them fulfilling their career ambitions.”
