Organisers from the town’s athletics club Burn Road Harriers are predicting another year of quick times on the new route which is only being run for the second time. This year’s five-mile race will start near the Wingfield Castle, make its way to the sea front promenade, before heading to Seaton Carew and back again.

Harriers chairperson Jane Wistow said: “We are almost full now and there are only about 50 places left. It is proving to be really popular, as in previous years.

“We think we will get a record number of runners across the line.”

Last year, there were 501 competitors. And even with the annual prediction of a 10% dropout of runners on race day, it should still lead to a record turnout. No entries will be taken on the day.

The race will start with the firing of a cannon. Everyone who finishes the run will get a T-shirt.

The race will be chip timed and the course is known as a fast route with the potential for personal bests. People can register online and the cost is £10.50 for affiliated runners and £12.50 for unaffiliated. Contestants have to be at least 15 to take part and the flat course will have water stations.
