Rode bike over drink limit while banned

A BANNED driver was arrested after being caught riding a motorbike on a housing estate while almost three times the limit.

Motor menace Ryan Michael Dowson, 18, was arrested by police after he was spotted riding a suspected stolen white-coloured off-road bike in the Owton Manor area of Hartlepool.

Prosecuting, Lilian Atkinson told Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court: “We received a call saying this defendant was riding the vehicle over a grassed area of Owton Manor.

“He was arrested on suspicion of theft. While in custody he provided a breath sample which showed 102 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.”

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath, so the reading left him almost three times the limit.

Mrs Atkinson said checks showed Dowson was a banned driver and that he had no insurance.

The court heard the teenager, of Kinbrace Road, in the Owton Manor area of Hartlepool, was not charged with theft of the bike, but was accused of driving while unfit through drink, driving while disqualified and having no insurance, all on November 26 last year.

He denied all three charges and a trial was due to be held at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court for February 21.

But he failed to turn up at court and the case went ahead in his absence, with justices finding him guilty of the offences.

Dowson was soon after arrested for failing to turn up for his trial and brought before the court in custody where justices adjourned sentencing him until a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service has been carried out.

Chairman of the magistrates’ bench Barbara Sutheran adjourned the hearing until March 19 at 2pm and released Dowson on unconditional bail.
