Families have the chance to spend a night with nature as part of the RSPB’s annual Big Wild Sleepout at its Saltholme reserve.

People are being encouraged to pitch their tents and roll out their sleeping bags to get closer to nature and discover which night time creatures can be found on the reserve at a behind-the-scenes event, taking place on Saturday, July 28, from 5pm.

Aimée Lee, visitor experience manager, said: “Many people come and enjoy RSPB Saltholme during the day, but it is not often you get the opportunity to discover it after dark.

“From bats, moths and minibeasts to dusk birdsong and marvellous mammals, there’s a whole host of night time wildlife that calls RSPB Saltholme home.

“We’re calling on families to come on a nocturnal adventure with us – get together, get wild and discover the amazing night life here.”

Families can also take part in their own Big Wild Sleepout at home during the summer holidays.

The RSPB provides ideas and resources to help create a wild night.

By taking part, participants are taking steps towards the RSPB’s Wild Challenge, a free, year-round nature adventure which offers an online awards scheme, encouraging families to go out and get closer to the natural world.

By completing activities ranging from sleepouts, minibeast safaris and habitat exploring, to making a compost heap and planting for wildlife, participants can log their achievements on the RSPB Wild Challenge website and collect bronze, silver and gold awards.

Aimée added: “With the amount of time children and families are spending outside in nature in decline, experiences like the Big Wild Sleepout are amazing opportunities to get out and discover the wildlife that surrounds us all. The chance to connect and experience the wonders of nature should be a part of every child’s life and the Big Wild Sleepout event at RSPB Saltholme is here to help you start your own wild adventure. We’ve planned some special night time activities from a guided twilight walk and moth trapping to telling stories around the campfire, this is the ultimate summer sleepout experience.

The event costs £20 for adult members, £12 for child members, £25 for adult non-members and £15 for child non-members and booking in advance is essential by visiting at least 7 days before the event.
