Eight years and still going strong. That’s the annual Hartlepool & District Hospice Santa Fun Run, which is already attracting entries.

This year’s event is on Sunday, December 6, in Ward Jackson Park, and families are being urged to take part.

Among those already signed up are relatives of the late Derrick and Mary Lees.

Derrick and Mary’s children and grandchildren have taken part every year since 2010 and have raised more than £2,500 in his memory.

Derrick’s son Richard and daughter-in-law Pam also get involved by volunteering, giving out the Santa suits and reindeer antlers.

Gordon Lees, Derrick’s son, said, “The Lees clan started doing the Santa Fun Run to give something back to the hospice after the brilliant care that my dad received at the hospice.

“The family love this event and have come back each year since 2010. The family chose to do this event because my mam loved Christmas.”

Hospice community fundraiser Janice Forbes said: “The Santa Fun Run is always a lovely event and is one that I look forward to each year.

“It is a brilliant way to start the festive season and is lots of fun for all the family.

“Since the first Santa Fun Run in 2008, £26,500 has been raised for our specialist patient care services.

“This year we are hoping that it is going to be the best ever, with hundreds of Santas and his little helpers joining in.”

For the first time, people can register their dogs for the run as well, and each dog will get their own Santa suit.

Twenty 3 Taxis has sponsored the event this year.

The run starts at 11am and takes in one full lap of the park. Afterwards, entrants are welcome to a mince pie, supplied by Maria from Place in the Park.

Other attractions include a children’s choir, DJ Kevin King playing festive tunes, stalls and a tombola.

The cost of registering is £7.50 for adults, who will receive a Santa suit; £5 for children under 16, who will get a Santa hat or antlers and a flashing nose as well as a medal; and £5 for dogs, who will receive a Santa suit.
