The funeral was to be followed by internment at Pittington Cemetery and a wake at the Belle Vue Social Club, in Hartlepool.

Mark’s cousin Gary Horton was due to speak at the service.

Mark, who was born and bred in Hartlepool but lived in Peterlee in recent years after marrying wife Loraine, was assaulted in Victoria Road, Hartlepool, close to its junction with York Road, just after 4am on October 5.

Mark, dad to five-year-old Ella, was left with serious head injuries and he was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where he died around a week later on October 11.

A fundraising page to help his family with funeral costs was set up shortly after the assault and has so far raised more than £8,000.

• A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently on police bail.
