Roseberry Primary School, in Marsh House Avenue, Billingham, has bought a double-decker bus, which staff and pupils refurbished to become their new library.

It is parked as a permanent fixture in the school playground where the plan is to use it as an additional learning space.

Youngsters can even use the book bus during playtimes and lend books which they can take home.

Headteacher Maggie Fearnley said: “It is a great way to support the development of language skills and vocabulary, reading, and writing.

“It is an engaging resource for our school and our children, who have been very excited about the launch.”

As part of the programme to encourage children to read, voluntary group Beanstalk is coming into the school once a week to read with the children and use interactive games to encourage engagement.

Bill Walton, chair of governors at Roseberry Primary, said: “This is a unique venture that the school should be proud of.

“It is just one example of Roseberry pushing new initiatives to stimulate learning and support education.”

Parent-governor Rachel O’Riordan added: “The bus is brilliant! I have visited it with my children and feel it is a perfect environment to stimulate their enjoyment of reading.

“It’s an exciting place to read and learn.”
