Scott Flinders warns Hartlepool United's relegation fight is far from over

And the 29-year-old York City stopper says he would have no regrets relegating his former club if it meant the Minstermen staying in the Football League.

Flinders left Pools in the summer after six seasons and 276 appearances in all competitions for the club - more than any other goalkeeper in the club's history.

He played a key role in helping keep Pools up last season against all the odds and he believes there is enough talent in the struggling York squad to pull off another 'Great Escape'.

Craig Hignett said his in-form side should now be looking up, not down, after their midweek point away at Newport County saw them pull eight points clear of second-bottom York.

But Flinders remains confident his new club can still get out of trouble this campaign.

"We've got better players than we had at Hartlepool, especially after the two signings we’ve just made, so fingers crossed it can be done," said Flinders.

"Last season we knew deep down we would stay up and I believe there's that same feeling here now.

"We are at the business end of the season and have made things hard for ourselves, so in the last ten games we've really got to pull some results out of the bag because wins are paramount, not performances.

"I'm always one for a fight – and we have one hell of a fight on our hands now – but I'm up for it and I'm sure the rest of the lads are too."

Pools, who still have two games in hand over the sides around them, travel to Crawley on Saturday looking to extend their three-game unbeaten run and put further daylight between themselves and the sides below them.

Dagenham & Redbridge prop up League Two with 25 points, York are a place above them with 27, while third-bottom Stevenage are just outside the relegation places on 34 points.

Flinders, though, admits he would have no qualms in relegating his old club, with the two sides meeting at Victoria Park on April 16.

"Hartlepool has a fond place in my heart because I spent six years there – but I have to look after York City and, if we stay up, I'm not bothered at all who goes down," added Flinders.
