Seaton sun lovers hope heatwave is here to stay

The sun has got his hat on '“ and people in Hartlepool hope it is here to stay.

It was the hottest day of the year in some parts of Britain yesterday with the mercury topping 35C or 95F in the south.

Here in Hartlepool it reached a more comfortable 25C drawing many people to Seaton Carew’s promenade.

Among those soaking up the sun was Mary Ogden, 82, from Eaglescliffe.

She said of the heatwave: “I think it’s been fabulous, I’m enjoying it anyway.

“Just the odd time it gets to you but I have loved it. It saves you going away.

“I like this area where its nice and peaceful and nice and fresh. And nice fish n’ chips.”

Sharon Hogbin, 49, of Brierton Lane, took grandchildren Dalton Collier, six, and Jaxon Fitzpatrick, four, to play on the beach.

She said: “It’s not often it happens so we’re really enjoying it and hope it lasts a lot longer. We’re lucky to have the beach near us.

“The kids have been paddling in the sea and building some sandcastles; just loving it really.”

Elaine and David Adair, of Hart Station, enjoyed a walk along the seafront with their Tibetan terrier Belle.

Elaine, 68, said: “It has been too hot at times, but it’s nice, especially when you are not working.

“We tend to do down the beach where we live. I suppose the gardens are ready for some rain but I hope it goes back.”

Seaton resident George Waggott, 76, was going for a stroll along the promenade.

He described the weather as ‘glorious’ adding: “Why can spend all that money to go abroad when you stop at home and have it here.

“It’s when it comes to winter that everybody hates.”

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office today/Friday. The weekend is due to be cooler and cloudier.
