POLICE have appealed for information after reports of a woman being assaulted in the early hours of the morning.

Detectives say they are investigating what they have described as a “suspicious incident” which took place in an alleyway behind a chip shop at The Front, Seaton Carew, in the early hours of Monday, November 21.

The alleyway backs on to the Rocket House car park, which was sealed off yesterday while officers carried out their investigations.

Door-to-door inquiries have also taken place.

As part of their investigations, detectives are also appealing for the driver of a small silver car, similar to a Ford Focus or Fiesta to come forward, as they believe he may be able to help.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A woman has come forward making allegations and officers would like members of the public who saw anything suspicious in the area to come forward.”

Police were initially treating the incident as a serious sexual assault.

No arrests had been made at the time of going to press.

Anyone who saw the car in Hartlepool town centre or in Seaton Carew between midnight and 2am on Monday is asked to contact Hartlepool CID on (01642) 302110 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
