The work is being carried out by Durham County Council after Highways England identified the area for better traffic signalling.

In recent years, there has been a number of serious accidents at the location including deaths.

Highways England said: “Work will start on a £1.1 million improvement safety scheme next month (August) to install traffic signals around the A19/A179/B1280 Sheraton roundabout.

“This work which is being carried out by Durham County Council on our behalf will improve journey times, reduce congestion and improve safety.

“Ahead of the main work Durham council are carrying out some preparatory work this week.

“This improvement was announced in March 2017 as part of a £220 million Congestion Relief Fund.”

The new lights aim to reduce the amount of queuing traffic onto the A19 from the northbound slip road.

A proposed speed limit reduction across the junction to 40mph intends to make it easier for drivers to turn right.
