Six people have been arrested after a 4x4 ploughed through the front gates of a house and was set alight.
It also hit a second vehicle parked on the driveway while cars near the scene in Coronation Road, Wingate, were also damaged.
Durham Police say a loud bang, which was believed to be a firearm being discharged, was heard too.
Officers have described what happened as a "targeted incident" and believe there is no threat to the wider community.
Detective Superintendent David Ashton, from Durham Constabulary, said: “Following our ongoing investigation into the incident, I can confirm that six local males have been arrested in connection.
“Officers are continuing to follow up a number of lines of inquiry and would like to reassure residents that this was a targeted incident and there is no threat to the wider community.
“I would like to appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time this took place, to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 344 of November 21.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident at around 6.20pm on Tuesday or has any information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 344 of November 21.
