A SLIMMER lost almost four stone to make it into the final of a nationwide competition where he met former footballer and sports pundit Robbie Savage.

Hartlepool man Brian Staunch, 19, lost 3st 10½lbs to make the final 38 in Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year 2012 competition and being voted through by fellow slimmers from all 10,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland.

The competition recognises the achievements of people aged 15-21 in making long-term lifestyle changes to become fitter, healthier and happier.

Brian, who joined a Hartlepool Slimming World group in September last year, said: “I often felt like people were staring at me because I was bigger than everyone else and I’ve been called names.

“My confidence was really low. I knew I needed to change and I knew I needed help.”

Brian was presented with a certificate and gift for his success and got to meet the former footballer and Strictly Come Dancing star.

Robbie, who featured in the BBC’s Olympic coverage, said: “I’m equally in awe of the young slimmers I’ve met, like Brian, and the way in which they’re transformed their lives.

“Losing weight has made them fitter and healthier and given them self-esteem, often for the first time ever.

“For someone so young to set themselves a goal and achieve it like Brian has done is something to be very proud of.”

Janice Bryson, who runs the Hartlepool Slimming World group which Brian attends, said: “Everyone is so proud of Brian.”
