A FIELD fire caused a plume of smoke which could be seen for miles.

Firefighters were carrying out community safety work in Horden when they were called to the land at the rear of nearby Smiley Road in the village.

The blaze started in grass and gorse.

The team of four firefighters from Peterlee Fire Station used beaters to put out the flame.

They spent 20 minutes at the scene.

The officers said the strong winds made the fire look more serious than it was.

The blaze was reported at 3pm on Sunday and the cause of the fire is not known.
