Southampton defender reveals why he chose Middlesbrough as two midfielders near exit

The 23-year-old full-back joined Tony Pulis' side on a season-long loan from Southampton yesterday, after receiving a call on Wednesday afternoon expressing Boro's interest.

And McQueen, who has racked up over 50 appearances for the Saints, had no doubts when he was offered the chance to join the Championship club.

"As soon as I heard that, I was eager to get myself up here, so within a few hours I was on a flight from Southampton to Newcastle" McQueen told mfc.co.uk.

"The size of the club is one thing, it’s a huge club to come and play for."

McQueen has also played further forward, and his versatility should help address Boro's lack of options on the flanks.

The defender has struggled to get game time in recent seasons, with established left-back Ryan Bertrand occupying the role at St Mary's.

And, McQueen's desire to play first-team football again, as well as some advice from a former team-mate, made Boro an easy choice.

“I’ve had friends who have played at this club that I’ve spoken to the likes of Calum Chambers who said really great things about it, so it’s a big opportunity for someone like me to come and prove myself.

“It’s one that I was eager to come and show what I can do.”

McQueen's arrival could allow other players to leave the Riverside before tonight's 5pm loan deadline.

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Hull are pushing to complete a deal for winger Marvin Johnson.

Meanwhile, Belgian side KV Kortrijk have claimed they have agreed to sign midfielder Julien De Sart, subject to medical tests.
