A NEW academy that helps budding Tiger Woods’ has topped off an incredible first year by being nominated for the first-ever Hartlepool Mail Sports Awards.
Hartlepool College of Further Education’s Golf Academy was only created last year, but has already been crowned the best of its kind in the North East.
Now it has been nominated in the Team of the Year category of our inaugural sports awards which seek to honour the town’s sporting successes in all areas of the community.
After striking up a partnership with Seaton Carew Golf Club the college has identified talented golfers Matthew Davison, Robbie Bailey, Thomas Nicholson and Connor Taylor.
By working alongside Seaton Golf Club pro Clifford Jackson, the students have all seen their handicaps reduce significantly and have represented the college at regional and national level.
Daniel Farman, from the college, who nominated the academy, said: “The academy has also been a massive help in developing theses four young men into mature, intelligent student athletes.
“The golfers, as they are known around the college, are held in very high esteem both by college staff and their fellow students.
“We can’t thank Seaton Golf Club enough. Clifford Jackson has been brilliant with the lads and they have been so accommodating.”
Judges for the sports awards are currently drawing up a shortlist before the presentation night which will be held in early October. Prizes will be awarded in 13 different categories covering all levels of sporting prowess from grass roots to international.
