Steelworkers get share of £6.25million payout

Former SSI steelworkers have been awarded a share of £6.25million by an employment judge over lack of consultation when their plant in Redcar closed, the Community union said.

SSI UK, which owns the Redcar steelworks,went into liquidation in October.

The Thai parent company was earlier granted an application to wind up the UK arm of its business at the High Court in Manchester.

It came after an announcement a few days previously that the plant was to be mothballed with the loss of 1,700 jobs.
