Student of the Year

IT’S quite something to be academically gifted. Alexandra Craig certainly is.

But to be an international level fencing expert as well is even more exceptional. The 19-year-old from Hartlepool is both, and crams in even more to her life on top of all that as well.

She is now a first year student at St Catherine’s College in Cambridge University where she is studying English.

The former English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College student, who achieved a perfect four A*s in her A levels – in English Literature, History, Sociology and General Studies – last summer, also plays the piano to a high standard, and saxophone to grade 7.

She described her success in winning the Student of the Year category as “really touching.

“It is nice to be recognised but I had not expected anything like this, with all the talent in this town.”

Yet despite her own success, Alexandra was quick to praise her fellow shortlisted finalists Zach Tarbah and Olivia Steel. She said: “They are younger than me and I can remember being in their shoes.

“I can see how much potential they have to achieve more in the future.”
