STUDENTS have praised Lord Mandelson for taking the time to stop and chat with them during a whistle-stop mid-morning tour of their new £53m college.
The former Hartlepool MP was guest of honour at the official opening of Hartlepool College of Further Education’s new Skills Academy earlier this week.
College principal and chief executive Michael Bretherick said: “His support over the years has been invaluable in bringing this new building to fruition.
“Everywhere I took him during his visit his comments were so positive. He made time to speak to many of our students which they weren’t expecting but were delighted that he did.”
Students chatted as they studied in tutorial rooms or their individual departments including the amazing aircraft hangar and state-of-the-art gym
Following his guided tour Lord Mandelson enjoyed a buffet before being whisked away to catch a lunchtime train back to London.
He left with the words: “The catering is superb, it’s just like a five-star hotel and the service from students really shows what customer service is all about.”
