Summer seems over with further rain expected - but will there be more sunshine yet?

Gloomy skies and drizzle greeted many people in the North East this morning - but there is hope for some more sunshine before the summer is over.

Today will continue to be largely cloudy with showery outbreaks of rain in places through the morning, with brief heavy spells expected in the south of the region.

Conditions are expected to improve the during the afternoon, becoming drier and brighter with a few sunny spells and feeling warmer and humid.

Tomorrow is set to be dry and quite cloudy during the morning with light winds, according to the Met Office. It's forecast to be a little brighter during the afternoon and remaining mostly dry, but with the chance of late showers. The maximum temperature is expected 24 °C.

The outlook for the rest of the week is dry with variable cloud, light winds and some warm sunshine. It will be cooler on Thursday with a chance of showery rain, and perhaps some thunder. Sunny spells and drier weather are expected on Friday.
