SUPERMARKET staff donned superhero costumes to celebrate their efforts in raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Martin James, store manager at Tesco Extra, in Hartlepool’s Burn Road, dressed as Superman to mark the achievement of customers and staff at the store who raised £5,865 towards live-saving research into cancer.

The store has been raising money since March last year after launching Tesco’s Charity of the Year partnership with Cancer Research UK.

Staff have since been raising vital funds for the charity in various ways including cycling and rowing challenges and collection weekends.

Their efforts will support research to improve detection and early diagnoses, which will help save lives and ensure that more people receive treatment with an increased likelihood of success.

The contribution from the Hartlepool store will go towards Tesco’s £10m pound target for the Charity of the Year collaboration.

Mr James said: “We are so thrilled to have raised this money for our Charity of the Year, Cancer Research UK, and would like to say a huge thank you to all staff and customers who have helped us along the way.”

Figures show two people are diagnosed within our region every hour.

Mr James added: “The fact that so many people’s lives are touched by cancer has united us all around our goal to raise as much money as possible to help support Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists.”

Paul Wadsworth, regional spokesman for Cancer Research UK, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank-you to all the heroes at Hartlepool Tesco for raising so much money for our lifesaving work and helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

“The dedication they have put into raising vital funds to help improve the early diagnosis and detection of cancer is truly inspiring.”

The money that has been raised by Tesco stores, distribution centres and offices will be spent on supporting 32 early diagnosis and detection research projects in local communities across the UK.
