POLICE have issued an appeal for witnesses after a taxi driver was killed after his car left a dual carriageway and smashed into a tree.
The driver, who has not yet officially been named, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers discovered the taxi at around 2am yesterday on the A689 in Hartlepool.
The incident, which saw the road closed for four hours, happened on the westbound carriageway about half-a-mile east of Newton Bewley, as reported by the Hartlepool Mail.
An investigation is underway and a post mortem examination was due to take place yesterday.
