Terror attacks are a major concern for North East travellers, research reveals

More than half of travellers in London (52%) have terrorism worries, the statistics found, with numbers varying dramatically across Britain.

Carried out by International Travel and Healthcare, the research highlighted what people think they know about their travel insurance - and what they would do in the event of a terror attack during their holiday.

Almost a fifth of those who took part in the survey in the North East believed that travel insurance policies usually cover the cost of cancelling a trip if an act of terrorism has occurred, while 30% believed that it covered the cost of cutting a trip short for the same reason. A third of those questioned also thought that their travel insurance would provide cover for delays as a result of a terror attack - but this is not usually included in standard cover, they said.

Kate Huét, managing director at International Travel and Healthcare, said: “Our research with YouGov has shown that terrorism is very high on the list of concerns and is being taken seriously when people are thinking about their travel plans.

"There is now a very clear need for financial protection against its effects for the many thousands of people whose trips are indirectly affected by acts of terrorism."

She continued: “While it is unsurprising that people are concerned about terrorism in this changing world, it is worrying that so many people misunderstand what travel insurance covers, leaving them with no financial protection should an act of terrorism occur close to their proposed destination if they no longer want to travel."
