MORE than 80 deserving entrants are in the running for honours at this year’s Best of Health awards.

Nearly two months after we launched this year’s competition, in partnership with the Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group, we had entries pouring in at a rate of around nine every week.

And some of the health heroes whose names were put forward were nominated more than 20 times. More than 300 of you came forward with your suggestions on who deserved to win the trophies.

We are now down to the crucial stage in deciding who will pick up trophies at the ceremony on Thursday, June 5, at the Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield.

The competition judges were meeting today to whittle through the fantastic entrants and pick out the very best in each category.

It promises to be a truly difficult task with so many superb entries - from nurses to pharmacists, and midwives to doctors.

We shall be showing our gratitude for the excellent work done by unsung heroes - the people who save our lives, who get us better when we’re sick and who give selflessly to help others. Thanks must go to all the sponsors.

As well as the Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group, we also got backing from the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, Seneca Homes, the Cleveland Fire Support Network and Hardwick Hall Hotel.

Today, the judges were meeting to choose who will go on to the shortlist in each category. Judges are looking for evidence of nominated teams and individuals who consistently deliver high quality services and show an excellent attitude towards patients in the Hartlepool area.

They want people who get on with their job but whose drive and commitment always shines through, and who goes the extra mile while always keeping in sight the wellbeing of those whose care they are involved in. And in just two weeks, the deserving winners will be revealed on what promises to be a night of high emotion.

Make sure you keep following the Hartlepool Mail to find out who makes it on to the shortlist, as well as full coverage of the awards evening on the Hartlepool Mail’s website at, in paper and on Twitter.
