There were superheroes galore on a sponsored stroll through Ward Jackson Park which raised money for the Hartlepool Special Needs Support Group.

It brought plenty of colour – and a whole load of lovely smiles – when about 35 people joined in the group’s second sponsored walk known as the Superhero Stroll. It has become so popular it could now be turned into an annual event.

Grace Guerin, a Hartlepool Special Needs Support Group trustee, said: “We were hoping that £200 would be raised and that would be fantastic. Quite a few of our young people had fundraised and we are really proud of what they have done.

“For us, this was also about getting out and letting the public know what the group is all about. We chose Ward Jackson Park as the venue to build up our profile.

“We were hoping to get Batman, Wonder Woman and quite a few other superheroes and it was a fundraiser, but mostly it was a fun event.”

The walkers tackled a route around the edge of the park and got a medal and a certificate. Grace said: “We did it last year and that was a great event apart from the rain. We were aiming to get an extra 10 entrants this year and we are hoping the stroll will now be an annual thing.”

The event is not the only one on the calendar for the support group’s fundraising arm. Grace explained: “As part of our summer scheme, we have a movie screening at the Town Hall Theatre on Monday, July 31, from 1pm to 4pm.”

Families can enjoy Finding Dory on a day of fun from 1pm which will include face painting, glitter tattoos, fun and games and tickets are available at £5 for adults and £4 for children under 12.
