A man stole vodka to sell to buy food.
Martin Strickland needed money because his benefits stopped, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court heard.
Strickland, 40, of Oxford Road, Hartlepool, admitted theft from the Co-op in Stockton Road on September 20.
Neil Taylor, defending, said in mitigation: “Mr Strickland was offered a job so he stopped claiming benefits.
“The offer fell through, so he stole the vodka to sell to get money for food.”
Strickland was ordered to pay £277 in costs and compensation.
