A 38-year-old man stole an ornamental candle because he was short of money.
Andrew Downing took the Yankee Candle because he knew there was a black market for them, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court heard.
“He was seen by staff at Boots on the Anchor Retail Park to pick up the candle and leave without paying for it,” said Sean Ell, prosecuting.
Downing, of Rium Terrace, Hartlepool, admitted theft on November 7,
John Relton, defending, said in mitigation: “Mr Downing was short of money and decided to steal the candle because he knew he could sell it. He has behaved in this way in the past, but he does realise he cannot keep on doing so.”
The magistrates ordered Downing to pay £22 compensation to Boots, and £200 costs. The money will be deducted from his benefits.
