Thieves steal conductor

MINDLESS thieves have stolen a lightning conductor from a church.

St Paul’s Church, in Grange Road, Hartlepool, was targeted by the criminals who made off with the 8ft lightning protector.

Church workers noticed that the device – that protects the building from lightning strikes by providing a safer path for current to flow to earth – was gone yesterday morning.

They contacted Hartlepool Police, believing it could have been stolen some time over the past two weeks.

Officers have now launched an investigation into its disappearance.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “The lightning conductor was noticed missing yesterday morning.

“It is believed the conductor was stolen some time over the past fortnight and we would appeal for anyone who knows anything about the theft to contact police.”

Police in the town are currently running two operations to stop thieves in the town stealing metal such as lead from roofs that they then sell on as scrap for quick cash.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, should contact Hartlepool officers on (01642) 302110 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
