Thieves target golf club

A GOLF club has been targeted by a gang of thieves who made off with heavy fencing panels.

Police say it would have taken a “number of people” to lift the 15 steel panels from Hartlepool Golf Club, in Speeding Drive.

They were being kept in the green keeper’s store when the thieves struck either on the night of Tuesday, March 22, or early the following morning.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “The galvanised panels, 15 in total, are very heavy and it will have taken a number of people to steal them.

“A flat bed or pick-up-type vehicle may have been used to take the panels from the premises.”

The Mail recently reported how police in Hartlepool are facing a tough task in stopping the town being “systematically” pulled apart by metal thieves.

They are stealing items such as led off roofs and manhole covers and weighing them in at scrap yards for cash.

But police say they can not be certain the thieves will have taken these panels to be weighed in.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to ring PC Matthew Kenning, of Hartlepool Police, on (01642) 302178 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
