THOUSANDS of homes and businesses have been without power since the early hours.
Hundreds of people in East Durham were waking up to disruption on Friday morning after a power cut.
Some businesses contacted the Mail to say they could not open their electric shutters due to the fault.
Some 2,159 customers are affected by the outage, mainly in the Peterlee and Blackhall areas.
Areas hit by the power cut in the SR8 and TS27 areas included Blackhall Industrial Estate, Middle Street, Hawthorn Close, Burns Avenue and Dene Terrace.
It was hoped that the power would be restored by 10.30am on Friday.
A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said: “We were first made aware of the fault at 5.59am, when we received the first call.
“We have identified the issue as a fault on the overhead line.
“Our guys are on-site repairing that and we hope to have supplies back by 10.30am.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
