Thousands apply for 150 jobs

SHOCKED bosses at a planned new Hartlepool store have been inundated with thousands of applications for jobs.

Work-hungry town residents have come forward in droves to try and clinch a position at the new The Range store.

They emailed, tried to apply for work through social media sites, wrote letters and and overwhelmed the Job Centre with requests – and that’s before an official date for job applications had even been declared.

Management confirmed that the level of interest had been surprising.

A company spokesman confirmed the number of people coming forward to ask for a job was “multiple thousands” but only 150 positions are available.

They added: “After announcing that The Range was coming to Hartlepool the company has been inundated with applications for jobs. Staff at The Range were shocked at the influx of applications being sent via post, email and even social media sites, with thousands applying before a date of application had even been released.

“The new store in Hartlepool will create around 150 part-time and full-time jobs, from store and department managers to warehouse and admin staff.”

It will officially open on Friday, August 17, becoming the 66th outlet in the Range chain when it starts trading on Tees Bay Retail Park, in Brenda Road.

The Range is owned and run by Plymouth-based entrepreneur Chris Dawson and is recognised for offering more than 65,000 products across 16 departments including; DIY, homewares, furniture, lighting, arts & crafts and garden.

Mr Dawson said: “Whenever we open a new Range superstore, it is a case of finding the place, right time and right price. Hartlepool was just what we were looking for.

“It won’t stop here, that I can guarantee you. We are now on our 66th store, with many more in the pipeline for 2012.

“We are also very pleased to be able to create a number of local jobs and are confident this store will play a big part in the continued success of The Range brand across the UK. I would like to thank the council for welcoming us to Hartlepool with such open arms.

“We would like to welcome the locals to the store opening, so they can see first-hand, what we are about and the great quality and value products we can offer them.”
