THREE people had to be taken to hospital following a smash on the A19.
It happened when a postal delivery van and a Volkswagen Golf collided on the southbound side of the carriageway next to the Elwick turn-off at about 9pm on Wednesday.
The occupants of the Golf, a woman and her young daughter, and the male driver of the van, were taken to hospital suffering from whiplash.
Andy Robinson, watch manager at Hartlepool Stranton station, said: “The A19 was closed for a number of hours while the scene was cleared.
“None of those involved were seriously injured but had to be taken to hospital for precautionary checks.”
