WEATHER forecasters have issued a warning as thunderstorms look set to bring heavy downpours to Hartlepool and East Durham.
The Met Office is expecting severe weather to hit the region during Tuesday night before more rain and lightning arrives on Wednesday.
The region had been basking in warm sunshine until recently, and the temperatures look to still remain high with thermometers still at around 16C overnight.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Thunderstorms giving localised downpours and large hail are expected to develop across northern England during the latter part of the afternoon and through the evening.
“Further thundery downpours are likely across more eastern parts of England at first on Wednesday, although these should clear from the west during the early morning in England.
“There is also a risk of further heavy showers developing over parts of North-East England during the afternoon.
“The public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption to travel due to surface water flooding.”
