Tim Krul's future at Newcastle United in balance as Crystal Palace boss weighs up move

Alan Pardew is understood to be looking to sign a goalkeeper this summer.

And Krul – who has a year left on his contract at the relegated club – is one potential target.

The 28-year-old – who ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in October last year – is working through the summer in a bid to return in time for the start of the new Championship campaign.

But Krul is not certain to be fit for the start of the season.

United manager Rafa Benitez is also under no pressure to sell any of his big names, though Krul’s contractual situation complicates his position at St James’s Park.

The Holland international could even sign a new deal with Newcastle.

Krul hinted that he would stay at the club in a statement issued on Twitter after the season-ending 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

“I am still finding it hard to come to terms with what has happened this season and it’s been devastating for me that I haven’t been able to help us sustain our Premier League status due to injury,” he tweeted.

“On a personal level, I have been making big strides in the right direction by training outside with the physio and goalkeeping coach as I continue towards full fitness.

“The fans have been incredible and deserve success.

“Everyone at the club will be fighting to get Newcastle United back into the Premier League where it belongs.”

United will be without Rob Elliot – who suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March and has also had surgery on his thigh – for the start of the season.

Elliot, outstanding in goal in the absence of Krul, isn’t expected to be fit until late in the year. And Karl Darlow could start next season between the posts.

Pardew, meanwhile, worked with Krul during his time at United.

And he is interested in taking Krul to Selhurst Park, where he would be reunited with former Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, father of Freddie.

Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, at Euro 2016 with Wales, is expected to leave this summer.

Defender Steven Taylor must look for a new club after turning down a new incentive-based one-year deal to stay at Newcastle.

The long-serving centre-back, who made 268 appearances and scored 15 goals, will leave St James’s Park when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Manager Rafa Benitez said: “Steven has been a very good player for this club for a long time, and his character and personality has always been very positive, including during difficult times. I’d like to thank Steven for his service and I wish him well for his future.”

Taylor said: “It’ll be a huge wrench to leave Newcastle, but I’ve been offered exciting opportunities both in the UK and abroad. I’m really looking forward to my next challenge.”

Newcastle have extended Swiss defender Kevin Mbabu’s contract until 2018.
