Tony Pulis on what Middlesbrough need to mount promotion push next year - and not wasting Steve Gibson's money

But the Boro boss insists he won’t waste owner Steve Gibson’s money as he looks to improve the squad this summer.

Middlesbrough failed to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final, as last night’s game ended goalless at Villa Park.

Pulis and Boro will have to plan for another season in the Championship after failing to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

When asked whether Pulis was more determined ahead of next season following the play-off heartache, he said: “I have always been determined.

“I know what we need, what is necessary. It is just whether we can do it.

“I won’t waste Steve’s money.

“He has spent a fortune. If we can get better we will, if we can’t the players have shown over a season that they are close.”

Former Stoke and West Brom boss Pulis added: “This is a very good football club, with an excellent chairman who has ploughed a lot of money in.

“He understands football, which helps. It is a fabulous club, a ‘to do’ club.

“Everyone wants to help to move the club forward.

“This club is a real ‘to do’ club and everybody pushes and pulls in the right direction.

“We have a chance, what we have to do is put a team on the pitch that justifies the great support they have got and the people that work there.

“The next task ahead is to see if we can improve it.”
