Top chef crowns Julia’s dish as top of the pots!

SHE’S at it again! Hartlepool’s very own competition queen Julia Kiss has added another honour to her ever-increasing list of prizes.

Julia has featured regularly in the Mail in recent years having won a string of competitions in newspapers, magazines and on TV including mini-cruises around Amsterdam, a once-in-a-lifetime trip in a hot air balloon, a cruise around the Mediterranean and a new car.

As well as regular appearances on national television, she’s also scooped a new mountain bike and had her home fitted with new carpets.

The self-confessed competition addict, 47, has now been awarded the accolade of North East’s Favourite Potato Recipe by and celebrity chef James Martin in a national quest to find Britain’s best potato dish.

Earlier this year, Julia uploaded her much-loved, quick and tasty Potatoes Puttanesca dish to recipe-sharing website, for the chance to win a starring role in a national TV advert and a luxury family farm stay.

From the hundreds of potato dishes entered, Julia’s was selected and crowned the North East’s favourite.

She joins nine other regional finalists from across Britain, all of which were selected by a panel of serious foodies, including Saturday Kitchen star James.

Julia, who works as an information analyst at the University Hospital of Hartlepool and lives in the Fens area, said: “The best thing about potatoes is that they don’t take very long to cook and go with just about anything and everything I have in my kitchen cupboards. I still can’t quite believe that my dish was taste-tested by James Martin and went on to make it through to the final. I’m overjoyed!”

James said: “This competition offers budding chefs like Julia all over Britain the chance to not only share their favourite recipes with the nation but also hopefully inspire even more people to cook with potatoes. Julia’s Potatoes Puttanesca recipe is a great example of this.

“Potatoes are such a versatile ingredient. They’re always on my restaurant menus. Food trends come and go but potatoes are an important part of British life. They’re the perfect base for any healthy and delicious meal and are extremely quick and easy to cook.”
