The Met Office has issued a ‘yellow’ weather warning for much of northern England and southern Scotland.

This means that there will be icy patches with snow mainly at higher ground levels, which could make for tricky driving conditions. However, snow is not expected on lower ground.

The yellow weather warning extends to most areas between Manchester and central Scotland, but coastal areas are expected to be less severely hit by icy roads.

Drivers in the North East are asked to be more careful, particularly when travelling further inland and on to higher ground.

The Met Office has also warned that journeys by road and rail could take longer than usual.

Temperatures are not expected to rise much above two or three degrees - but they are expected to feel even colder when the wind chill factor is taken into consideration.
