Training boost from port bosses

PORTS chiefs have launched a training scheme after taking on 13 extra apprentices.

PD Ports, the owners of dockland in Hartlepool, has unveiled a project to train the new recruits to NVQ Level 2 in dock operations.

The new recruits are aged from 18 to 30 and will be trained for 18 months.

Chief executive David Robinson said: “This new apprenticeship programme is about raising aspirations of the young people across the region, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to master a trade.”

He said it followed an increase in workload for the port company at Hartlepool’s neighbouring Teesport after the re-opening of the Redcar blast furnace.

Mr Robinson added: “As we move into 2012, we are looking to engage with the wider industrial community on Teesside to further collaborate on issues such as training and skills, and deliver greater prospects or work, employability and skills development in the area.”
