POLICE have named the motorist who died after his car crashed on a busy dual carriageway.
Gary Barella, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car struck a lamppost after leaving the A19 southbound carriageway, near Hawthorn Services at Easington.
Police say no other vehicles are thought to have been involved in the incident.
Mr Barella, from South Terrace, in Horden, was married with two teenage daughters was a care worker, looking after adults with autism.
The incident happened just before 12.30pm on Thursday, April 21, and the southbound carriageway was closed until around 2.45pm, with tailbacks stretching three miles.
Police, ambulance and fire crews from Peterlee Fire Station were all called to the scene.
A post mortem examination is yet to be carried out but police are no longer appealing for witnesses.
