Twins cross finishing line

PREMATURE twins who turned two last month were scooted over the finish line in their pram by their grandad.

Billy Garthwaite, 42, ran the 5k course while pushing young Harvey and Archie Garthwaite in their double pushchair.

The Mail has regularly featured updates on the progress of the twins, who were born 17 weeks early.

Their dad, also called Billy, a 21-year-old joiner, was hot on the heels of the trio, having also taken part and they were met by the twins mum Hayley Kennedy, of Irvine Road.

Billy Snr, from Swalebrook Avenue, said: “I’m just sweaty and tired.
“It did help, having the pushchair to rest on.”

The twins’ grandmother Michelle Garthwaite, whose dad and grandfather, both called Billy Mayes, and aunt Catherine Doyle, died from cancer, said: “I think it’s brilliant that this has been put on.
“Archie has cerebral palsy and Michael Day helped us go down various avenues of getting things for his needs to get him through life.

“To be told the twins might not live, and to see they are here today, it’s amazing.”
