TWO motorists were taken to hospital with broken bones and fractures after being involved in a head on collision.
Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to Thornley crossroads on the Shotton Colliery to Wingate road shortly before 9.45pm last night after a collision involving a Seat and a Nissan.
One man was cut free from the Seat while firefighters also helped remove another man from the Nissan and both were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for treatment.
A spokesman for Peterlee Fire Station said both men were breathing and conscious and both were believed to have suffered broken bones and fractures.
Both cars were severely damaged in the incident.
The road was closed for more than 90 minutes while emergency services dealt with the incident.
