Hartlepool Carnival is just around the corner and people are invited to help get this year’s packed programme off to a flying start.

This year’s festivities kick off officially with Miss Carnival next Saturday when a girl for the prestigious title will be selected.

It takes place at the Headland Social Club, on July 25, at 7pm and is open to girls aged 16 and over.

Among Miss Carnival’s duties will be supporting other carnival events over the next two weeks and take part in the Carnival Day parade, which this year falls on Saturday, August 8.

Top singer Paulo will also perform at the Miss Carnival event and entry is £2.

A Hartlepool Carnival committee spokesman said: “We hope people will come and give us their full support for our launch event.”

The small organising committee, who are all volunteers, have organised another packed schedule of events between Thursday, July 30, and Saturday, August 8.

They include the return of old favourites such as the Nutty Slack Race, Family Treasure Dig and Children’s Talent Competition.

The Raft Race will also return to the Fish Sands after being brought back after many years last year.

But the event, which is supported by the Harbour of Refuge pub, is being made bigger and better with the addition of a market and family fun day.

A committee spokesman added: “We brought back the raft race last year and it was a runaway success. And the carnival as a whole was a resounding success. But we always try and make each year better than the last.”
