A RAGS-to-riches Hartlepool tycoon and his wife were arrested amid reports of tawdry behaviour in a Florida nightclub.

Town-born multi-millionaire Chris Gorman, a former paperboy who went on to make millions from his Gadget Shop business, said in a reported statement that they “totally reject” all the charges, but admitted they had been arrested.

The incident is said to have happened in the Roxy Club, in Florida on August 13.

Mr Gorman, 44, and Mary, his 43-year-old wife of 19 years, were quizzed by police.

Reports say Mrs Gorman is due to appear before a judge on November 23, while her husband’s court appearance was postponed.

The pair were allowed to return to their home in Scotland while another man allegedly involved was released without charge.

Mr Gorman’s statement read: “Although the arrest did happen, we firmly do not believe that we have done anything to merit the charges or treatment we received. We totally reject all the charges and have appointed an attorney in Orlando who fully expects a successful resolution in due course.”

The former English Martyrs School pupil, who received an OBE in June 2005, played a major role in seeing the fledging high-street Gadget Shop chain expand across Britain after he ploughed a fortune into the business in 2002.
