DEMOLITION work started on Sunday afternoon on a fire-ravaged building in Hartlepool.

Part of a main road in the town, the A689 westbound, is also closed and gas and electricity supplies nearby have also been shut off as a result of the fire, at Hartlepool Snooker Centre, in Green Street, behind McDonald’s.

The incident was reported to Cleveland Fire Brigade at 3.24am on Sunday.

Two crews from Stranton Fire Station were sent to the scene, along with one from the Headland, one from Billingham and one from Stockton, as well as the hydraulic platform and the brigade’s incident command unit.

A crew from Middlesbrough are on standby at Stranton Station to cover any other incidents in the town.

A brigade spokeswoman said: “This is a large two-storey property and the fire involves the roof void, which is well alight.

Three jets and a hose reel are in use.”

Gas and electricity engineers were called to shut off supplies to properties in the area.
