A second wave of runners will grace the seafront on Miles for Men day in Hartlepool - and this time females are getting involved.
Walk for Women has been added to the agenda for the big day on July 31, and officials say hundreds of people are already expressing an interest.
We had women who were coming to support the men in previous years and they were asking us if we could do something for them. This year, we are doing that and so far, we have had 117 saying they will definitely take part, and 179 who are interested.Kevin Hill, promotions manager
Delighted organisers say the whole day is now shaping up to be an exciting day out for all the family.
The packed programme of fun will be held at The Domes in Seaton Carew and now includes:
• The Miles for Men 5k run at 1pm;
• The 5k Walk for Women at around 1.15pm. It will follow the same course as the men’s event;
• The Miles for Men music festival from 1.30pm to 9pm, featuring acts such as Kerrianne Covell, the White Negroes and a host of other performers.
Miles for Men promotions manager Kevin Hill said: “We had women who were coming to support the men in previous years and they were asking us if we could do something for them.
“This year, we are doing that and so far, we have had 117 saying they will definitely take part, and 179 who are interested.
“Although it is called Walk for Women, it is entirely up to the people taking part if they want to run it.”
As well as Walk for Women, a field of up to 500 males are expected to tackle Miles for Men. The men’s race will raise money for the Hartlepool & District Hospice while Walk for Women will support both the hospice and Miles for Men.
Entry for either of the races is £10 for adults, £7.50 for those aged from six to 17, £5 for those aged five and under, and the events are free for anyone aged 65 and over. All entrants get a T-shirt and medal.
Miles for Men was formed in 2012 and has helped both males and females in their battle with cancer.
Organisers would love to hear from anyone wanting to sponsor Walk for Women.
