Walkers take steps to help out hospice

GENEROUS fundraisers who completed a three-mile sponsored walk have boosted the coffers of a town charity.

Dozens of people were joined by Hartlepool MP Iain Wright and his Easington counterpart Grahame Morris at the event, organised by the Peterlee and District Lions Club.

The walk, from the Pavilion in Peterlee to Castle Eden Dene, was organised in support of Hartlepool & District Hospice.

And bosses at the Wells Avenue-based hospice were delighted after walk organisers revealed £1,750 had been raised by kind-hearted participants.

Tommy Miller, a member of the Peterlee and District Lions Club, said: “We are delighted. We didn’t really have a target before the event but to raise that much is absolutely fantastic.

“The hospice is a wonderful cause so to be able to support them in any way is a pleasure.” Tommy thanked everyone who took part in the event and also credited Horden boxing club Boxing Clever, which provided stewards, and Peterlee Town Council, Natural England and Peterlee Walking Club for all supporting the walk.

Janice Forbes, community fundraiser at the hospice, said: “Tommy has a huge personality and it was a real pleasure to work with him.

“He did a marvellous job and it was great that he got the two local MPs to take part in the walk.”

Meanwhile hospice staff are encouraging runners who have secured a place at this year’s Great North Run to support their local hospice.

The charity has 48 runners taking part in the world’s biggest half marathon race which starts in Newcastle and finishes in South Shields.

But bosses are looking to generate additional support from those already running without a particular charity in mind.

Greg Hildreth, events and community facilitator at the hospice, said: “We have seen this event grow in terms of fundraising in recent years and we are keen to build on that.

“We are inviting anyone who has their own running place to join us and take part as a member of our team.”

Those who choose to support the hospice can enjoy a pre-event meal and transport will also be arranged to and from the event as well as hospitality after the race.
