TOWN leaders have given their backing to the campaign urging people to donate items to the foodbank.
Hartlepool MP Iain Wright and Mayor Stuart Drummond have both pledged their support to the Mail’s “We Can Do It” campaign and urged people to support the foodbank in whatever way they can.
Mayor Drummond said: “As we move into some of the most difficult financial times that most of us will have experienced it is schemes like this that will help those most in need.
“Getting this foodbank up and running now in preparation of the difficult times shows extremely good foresight by the community in particular and sends out the strong message that people will stick up for each other.
“I fully support the Mail’s campaign.”
Mr Wright said: “I think it is an absolute tragedy that in 2012, in a country with the fifth largest economy in the world, we have to resort to foodbanks, it should not be like this.
“But equally I am so incredibly proud of the sense of community in Hartlepool in terms of people coming together to help out their fellow citizens.
“I would encourage people to think about those less fortunate than themselves when they are doing the weekly shopping trip.
“I know how tight it is for most people but even just one tin of produce can make a big difference and would be gratefully received by other people in town.”
