After a cloudy night with some rain, a chance of frost and a drop in temperature to 0C, this is what we are likely to see across the North East during Wednesday, December 4.

The forecasters say there will probably be rather more cloud around than in recent days, with this making gradual progress eastwards with time and introducing less cold but damp conditions with a little rain.

The sun and a little cloud is expected to continue until around 3pm, with sunset expected around 3.40pm.

The Met Office says we can welcome in a more changeable few days, with frost less prevalent than recently.

It will be windy with gales and some rain on Thursday.

It will turn drier but remaining windy on Friday and will be mainly fine on Saturday.

What is the long-term forecast?

On Sunday, December 8, rain and transient mountain snow will cross the UK, followed by blustery showers, heaviest in the west.

It should be windy with the risk of coastal gales.

Into the next week, the more unsettled theme is likely to persist with longer spells of rain and showers with drier interludes remaining short-lived.

Initially mild, temperatures are more likely to soon dip below normal, allowing an increasing risk of wintry showers the further north.

Also a low risk of more widespread snow on northern edge of rain bands.

Frost and freezing are fog possible, particularly in the north.

Temperatures may begin to recover by the end of the period.
