ONE hundred performers are getting ready for their moment in the spotlight – and it promises to be a wizard of an experience.
The Elwick Academy of Dance will stage The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the Town Hall Theatre, in Hartlepool, from tonight until Saturday, January 11.
This year’s show is the 65th from the dance school. It was all started by Freda Compton, the original owner of the dance school.
She founded the Elwick Academy of Dance in 1949 and staged 61 annual pantomimes. Freda passed away four years ago, but the pantomime trend has been continued by son Geoff Lucas.
He said: “When you pick up on a family tradition that has gone on for so long, it is great that it has gone on so well for so long.”
This year’s show features 100 of the academy’s students aged from two to 20.
Geoff added: “It is based on the traditional Wizard of Oz story, but with some additions from The Wiz and some of the other Oz stories, as well as extra characters.”
Shows start at 6.45pm each night with a 2pm Saturday matinee. Tickets are priced at £9.50 or £8.50 with concessions.
